Cerebral Palsy

(Adults & Children)

Cerebral palsy is a lifelong condition affecting movement and coordination, caused by damage to the developing brain before, during, or shortly after birth. It presents differently in every individual.

HOW WE CAN HELP

Physiotherapy for adults and young people with cerebral palsy can support mobility, comfort, strength and participation in everyday life. We can help with:

  • Walking and mobility

  • Balance and coordination

  • Strength and conditioning

  • Spasticity and altered muscle tone

  • Joint stiffness and maintaining range of movement

  • Posture, positioning and seating

  • School and classroom access

  • Participation in PE and physical activity

  • Training and guidance for school staff, family and carers

  • Transfers

  • Pain related to movement or posture

  • Fatigue and exercise tolerance

  • Equipment needs

  • Maintaining independence

PHYSIOTHERAPY IN YOUR OWN ENVIRONMENT

For children and young people with cerebral palsy, rehabilitation needs to fit around everyday life, not just take place during a therapy session.

We can work with clients at home, in school or college, and within the community to support mobility, participation and independence in the places that matter most. This might include practising transfers, stairs, playground or PE access, classroom mobility, positioning, walking, wheelchair skills or using equipment safely.

Where appropriate, we can also liaise with school staff, carers and the wider therapy team, provide practical guidance and training, and help ensure strategies are carried over consistently across home, education and community settings.

YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT

Your physiotherapist will spend time understanding your current mobility, physical challenges, lifestyle and goals.

We may assess strength, joint movement, muscle tone, balance, walking, transfers and posture. Together, we will identify the areas where physiotherapy can make the greatest practical difference and agree a personalised rehabilitation plan.
