Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can result in partial or complete loss of movement and sensation below the level of injury. This may be caused by trauma, disease, or a vascular event.

HOW WE CAN HELP

Physiotherapy following a spinal cord injury is highly individual and will depend on the level and nature of the injury. We can support you with:

  • Strength and conditioning

  • Transfers and bed mobility

  • Wheelchair mobility and skills

  • Standing and walking where appropriate

  • Balance and trunk control

  • Stretching and maintaining joint movement

  • Spasticity and muscle tone management

  • Positioning and posture

  • Fatigue and cardiovascular fitness

  • Equipment and mobility recommendations

  • Maximising independence at home and in the community

  • Training for family members, carers and support workers

PHYSIOTHERAPY IN YOUR HOME ENVIRONMENT

Rehabilitation at home allows treatment to focus on the practical challenges you experience every day.

This may include practising transfers in your own bedroom, wheelchair access around the home, standing or walking in familiar spaces, accessing the car or working towards greater independence in the community.

We can also liaise with other professionals and equipment providers where a joined-up approach is needed.

YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT

Your physiotherapist will complete a comprehensive assessment of your current function, mobility, strength, range of movement and day-to-day challenges.

We will discuss what independence means to you and identify meaningful rehabilitation goals. From there, we will recommend a treatment programme and any additional equipment, onward referrals or joint working that may be beneficial.
